MDOT Construction Engineer and Project Manager Brian Travis told WHMI they ask that motorists drive safe through the work zone and be patient as there will be traffic impacts and reduced capacities throughout the construction season, along with some ramp closures. Ramps will close intermittently for night work. During that time, both eastbound and westbound I-96 between I-275 and Kent Lake Road will have nightly lane closures between 8pm and 5am, at times leaving only one lane open. Later this month, nighttime closures are scheduled to begin – starting Friday, March 25th lasting through mid-April.

Crews may also work on Saturdays from 6am-6pm. On eastbound I-96, the right lane will be closed, intermittently, Monday through Friday between 9am and 3pm, starting from Kent Lake and moving further east toward I-275. MDOT advises work could also take place on Saturdays between 6am-6pm. Work will move further west as shoulder work and crash investigation sites are completed, until reaching Kent Lake Road. Westbound I-96 will have the right lane closed, intermittently, Monday through Friday from 7am-3pm, starting from I-275 to Novi Road. The Michigan Department of Transportation advises that daytime closures will be in effect starting today through late March. The project will rebuild eastbound and westbound I-96 between Kent Lake Road and the I-275/M-5/I-696 interchange in Oakland County. #MDOT TRAFFIC CLOSURES DRIVERS#
Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. The project is expected to be complete in spring 2023. The I-270/MD 85 interchange project will replace two I-270 bridges and widen MD 85 by adding a new travel lane in both directions between Spectrum Drive and Crestwood Boulevard. The barriers will prevent motorists on southbound MD 85 from making left turns into businesses prior to the traffic signal at Crestwood Boulevard/Shockley Drive. During the operation, crews will place traffic control barriers between the northbound and southbound lanes of MD 85 to improve safety. Motorists should also expect lane shifts and restrictions on MD 85 for both northbound and southbound lanes during the overnight work.

Motorists will use Westview Drive to Executive Way to access MD 85. Crestwood Boulevard will close between MD 85 and Westview Drive.Motorists will be detoured to westbound I-70 to access I-270 and US 15 and Northbound MD 85 exit ramps to northbound and southbound I-270 will be closed during the work.

The operation will require the following temporary overnight roadway closures: The overnight work is scheduled to end by 6 a.m.
#MDOT TRAFFIC CLOSURES INSTALL#
The traffic shift is necessary so crews can install new underground drainage pipes and continue widening work on northbound MD 85. Tuesday, crews will apply new pavement markings and then move traffic over one lane to the west. This work is part of MDOT SHA’s $87.7 million I-270/MD 85 interchange project to improve safety and reduce congestion.
